Abstract

Radicalism is a serious threat that can damage the stability and security of society, especially in Indonesia, which has cultural and religious diversity. This study aims to examine the authority and efforts made by the police in dealing with the threat of radicalism in society, with a special focus on Kendari City as a case study. This study uses an empirical normative approach with secondary data obtained through literature and regulatory studies as well as field studies. The analysis was carried out descriptively qualitatively to identify the role of the police in preventing and taking action against the threat of radicalism. The results of the study show that the police have a strong legal basis to carry out their duties in dealing with radicalism, such as Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Indonesian National Police and Law Number 5 of 2018 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Terrorism. These authorities include preventive functions, such as monitoring social media and educating the public, as well as repressive functions, such as taking legal action against perpetrators of radicalism. The efforts made involve a preventive approach through socialization, strengthening the role of Babinkamtibmas, and cooperation with other agencies such as BNPT. In a repressive context, the police are active in investigating, arresting, and disbanding radical organizations. However, challenges such as lack of public trust, limited resources, and the use of technology by radical groups remain significant obstacles. This study recommends improving the competence of police personnel, utilizing advanced technology for surveillance, and strengthening partnerships between the police and the community as strategic steps to effectively address the threat of radicalism.
